Modernization of the control system for WLM 2.5 boilers
Energy industry

In 2020 we faced the challenge of modernizing the WLM 2.5 boiler control system. The challenge was not the modernization itself but the period of time when we were supposed to do it. The heating season was approaching.

GOALS:

  • Adaptation of I&C to the current requirements of the Technical Inspection Authority.
  • Eliminate breakdowns and downtime.

CHALLENGES:

  • Selection of apparatus and development of a control algorithm in accordance with the requirements of Technical Inspection Authority.
  • Short implementation time due to the start of the heating season.
  • Development of a new control algorithm.

SOLUTIONS:

  • Application of Control and Measurement Apparatus compliant with the Technical Inspection Authority requirement.
  • The usage of a Siemens Fail-safe driver.
  • The project was carried out simultaneously on several levels which invloved: electrical design, arrangements with the Technical Inspection Authority and development of the control algorithm
  • Replacement of power and control cabinets.

BENEFITS:

  • High level of safety confirmed by compliance with the standards of the  Technical Inspection Authority.
  • Delivery of cabinets, commissioning of the system and Technical Inspection Authority fication made a few weeks before the deadline.
  • Elimination of failures and downtimes caused by failures of outdated equipment – no disruptions in heat production.

The heating season is a very ‘hot’ and demanding period for the energy industry. Our client decided to modernize the WLM 2.5 boiler control system. The main purpose of this modernization was to adapt the system to the current requirements of the Technical Inspection Authority and to eliminate failures and downtimes.

Worn-out control cabinets caused frequent failures which made it impossible to supply heat energy to the end users. It was a very troublesome failure during the heating season. The delivery of the new cabinets based on highly efficient Danfoss inverters and Siemens switching devices eliminated this problem.

Another improvement was the development of a simple but reliable algorithm for the Siemens controller. It allowed to simplify the operation of the system and to meet the safety requirements for such systems.

Compliance with safety requirements has been confirmed by the Technical Inspection Authority as well as provided with appropriate certificates. The entire project was completed even a few weeks before the scheduled date, which allowed for a thorough familiarization with the new solutions.
