Beyond profit: corporate social responsibility in times of ecological crisis

Control - ServiceNewsBeyond profit: corporate social responsibility in times of ecological crisis

It is difficult to name industrial areas that have not been affected by climate and environmental change. The increase in the number of natural disasters (from an average of 79 per year in the 80s of the last century to 170 in 2021 alone) is causing concern among society and business owners. PwC research confirms these concerns, showing that over 55% of global GDP depends on factors that are highly or moderately dependent on nature. Companies realize that every industry branch to some extent both influences and is dependent on the world around it.

The results of the study “CSR in practice – barometer of the French-Polish Chamber of Commerce” show that 84% of companies are already taking actions to fight climate change. The growing awareness of consumers, who are more and more willing to choose products that are least harmful to the environment, and the emerging legal standards, require a modernization of the approach to running a business.

The role of enterprises in preventing climate change

Companies are responsible for preparing a comprehensive community and environmental action plan and reporting their results in accordance with the guidelines. CSR, i.e. corporate social responsibility, defines the areas of these activities, and the CSRD directive imposes reporting obligations. The directive constitutes a reference point and harmonizes the guidelines to which we must strive. It also requires the involvement of stakeholders in the reporting process, which avoids apparent pro-ecological activities and favors including true information in reports.

The first reports, covering non-financial issues, will be published at the beginning of 2025. The reporting obligation will initially apply to companies employing over 500 employees and having the status of a public interest entity.

Some entrepreneurs, especially smaller ones, may assume that the new reality will only apply to the activities of large corporations. In fact, from 2027, the obligation to report non-financial activities will also cover small and medium-sized enterprises. Moreover, even before this year, a company’s social responsibility will become one of the key factors determining the choice of a company as a contractor, because large entities reporting their CSR activities will expect a similar level of awareness from their suppliers and partners.

CSR actions

CSR strategy, previously treated only as an addition to PR activities, is now a decisive factor for investors and other stakeholders. According to the KPMG report, 71% of large and medium-sized companies believe that enterprises should report non-financial issues, including those related to CSR and ESG. They also admit that operating the company in accordance with CSR assumptions has a positive impact on financial results. Implementing a corporate social responsibility strategy requires changes in the company’s operations at several levels:

  • Economic, understood not only in terms of generating profit, but also determining the level of the company’s innovation and the use of modern solutions.
  • Ecological, which presents how the company protects the environment against the negative effects of its activities.
  • Social, including employees, treated as the company’s greatest resource, and taking into account the interests of the society in which the company operates.

The role of new technologies

Companies that take active CSR activities take a responsible approach to the consumption of natural resources and invest in modern solutions that minimize the harmful impact of industry on the environment.

At Control-Service, we have been supporting conscious entrepreneurs for years. Thanks to our experience and successful implementations for companies from various sectors, we are able to select the most effective solutions and support in the selection of tools that minimize energy consumption, automate and visualize production processes.

Saving energy – the first step towards change

The introduction of energy-saving technologies is an important element of the CSR strategy. One of the methods that shows quick results is the use of frequency converters – according to the principle that the greenest energy is the energy that we do not use.

Frequency converters, popularly called inverters, allow you to minimize energy consumption. The devices operate by optimizing engine operation by adapting speed and torque to actual needs, which significantly reduces energy consumption. This leads to lower operating costs and – importantly – reduced CO2 emissions.

Thanks to the possibility of integration with existing systems and the variety of technical parameters, our team effectively selects devices to meet the needs of customers from every industry branch. We use Danfoss drives, a leader in optimizing energy and climate solutions.

At Control-Service, we assume that a conscious approach to the operation and repair of drives extends their operational life. In the event of a failure, we provide 24-hour inverter service and provide telephone technical support in case of the need for immediate repair. During servicing, customers can rent frequency converters. Thanks to this, they avoid production downtime. However, we usually cooperate in such a way as to prevent emergency situations – we focus on proactive audits of converters – DrivePro® Site Assessment.

Automation and robotization – work improvement

Automation and robotization of industry can also significantly contribute to reducing the negative impact on the natural environment. Implementations in this area increase production efficiency, which leads to lower consumption of raw materials, energy, and waste reduction. Automated systems allow you to optimize production processes in real time, which minimizes raw material losses. Robotization, in turn, allows for the introduction of advanced systems for monitoring machine condition and predictive maintenance. This allows equipment to be kept in optimal condition, reducing the risk of breakdowns and downtime. This leads to more efficient use of machines, extends their life and reduces waste associated with replacing parts and equipment.
